Massachusetts Legislature Passes Sales Tax Holiday Legislation
Tax-Free Weekend in August Will Boost Local Business
BOSTON – State Representative David Torrisi (D-North Andover) joined his colleagues in the House and Senate this week in overwhelmingly passing legislation that would allow a state sales tax break in August.
“This sales tax holiday will allow our local small businesses to see a great boost in sales while providing consumers with a much needed financial break. In a damaged economy such as ours, it is important to provide our local merchants and shoppers with an opportunity to stimulate the economy,” said Representative Torrisi. “Individuals looking to make substantial purchases may now do so without having to empty their wallets,” he continued.
This legislation designates August 13th and 14th as a sales tax holiday weekend exempting purchases of less than $2,500 for non-business sales of tangible personal property. Sales of motor vehicles, boats, meals, telecommunication services, gas, steam, and electricity do not qualify for the sales tax exemption and remain subject to tax.
