In 2011, the Legislature approved a redistricting plan that creates 160 new representative districts. A Special Joint Committee on Redistricting conducted 13 public hearings across the state, utilized a website to facilitate public involvement, and worked closely with the people of Massachusetts to redraw district boundaries in an open and transparent process. During its work, the Committee heard thirty-one hours of testimony from over 400 groups and individuals. The redistricting website received more than 10,000 hits. The plan includes the following features:
· Twenty majority-minority districts
· Four majority Hispanic districts
· An incumbent-free district in Lawrence
· 3 majority Black districts
With this plan, there have been changes to the 14th Essex District. As you can see on the maps below, the district will include a piece of Methuen and Haverhill, and portions of Lawrence and North Andover have shifted to other legislative districts. I've already had the pleasure of knowing many wonderful people in both communities and look forward to meeting more of you in the coming months.
